Learn to Sail!
The Lake Manawa Sailing School offers a relaxed, flexible approach tailored to meet our student’s needs. Our goal is for you to have a safe, fun-filled experience as you learn to sail. Our courses are designed to teach you the basic skills, knowledge and confidence required for all types of sailing. Whether your goal is to enjoy recreational sailing with family and friends, or to race competitively, we can provide the foundation for a satisfying life-long experiences on the water.
Youth Sailing (ages 12 and over)
We offer beginning youth group classes which meet for 4 consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 am to noon. The first session begins with the first Saturday in June and the second session starts with the first Saturday after the July 4th weekend. Beginning Sailing classes provide basic sailing instruction on 14-ft. single-sail Sunfish dinghies.
The cost is $75 per student, which includes a US Sailing instruction manual and a Junior membership to the Lake Manawa Sailing Club, which entitles the student to use the Club’s boats outside of the course instruction periods. To enroll in any of the youth sailing group classes, please complete the application forms linked below.
Beginning Adult Group Classes (Age 18 and up)
We offer adult group classes for beginning sailors on 14-ft. single-sail Sunfish dinghies. These classes are scheduled on 4 consecutive weekday evenings, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The cost is $150 per student, which includes a US Sailing instruction manual. Advanced Group Classes (Teens and Adults)
We also offer an advanced class for more experienced sailors on 2-sail centerboard sloops. This class teaches more advanced sailing techniques, including jib and main sail trimming for optimum performance. This class is taught on 4 consecutive Saturday mornings beginning with the first Saturday in June from 9:00 am until noon. The cost is $50/student for teens and $95/student for adults. Private Lessons (Teens and Adults)
Private lessons are tailored to the skill level of the students with 12 hours of instruction over 4 days scheduled to meet the availability of the student and the instructor. Students must know how to swim at least 50 yards and be able to float on their back without the assistance of a flotation device. A life preserver (which must be worn at all times while on the water) will be provided for the courses. The student should also wear closed-toe water shoes (sneakers are ok but no flip-flops).
